Let you think the desktop is an endangered species, HP, at least, begs to differ. The company just unveiled three of ‘em: the Pavilion p7, Slimline s5, and the Pavilion HPE h8 — all festooned with black finishes, rounded edges, sliding port covers, and metallic panels designed to blend in with the electronics already populating your living room. Of the three, the p7 is the most mainstream, with a non-threatening chassis that’s about the size you’d expect a tower to be. The Slimline s5 has a similar look, but is about half the size, making it look more like a media hub. Lastly, there’s the HPE h8, whose red accents and beastlier shape mark it as the power tower it is. For the money, you’ll get discrete graphics, optional Beats Audio, and support for dual displays. The p7 and h8 go on sale May 18, starting at USD$299 and USD$599, respectively. For the petite s5, you’ll have to step up to a USD$329 starting price. Look for it on June 15.

Before MySpace and Facebook, there was Friendster, a pioneering social networking website for consumers. First launched in 2002, Friendster attracted tens of millions of users over the years, but it never quite grew into the online juggernaut it could have been.

Having raised close to $50 million in venture capital, Friendster was acquired by Malaysian payments company MOL Global at the end of 2009 for a reported $40 million.

Fast forward to today, and it looks like Friendster won’t be so much about sharing with friends anymore. In a message to registered members (hat tip to @Mazi), the company is asking all users to install a custom application to export all their profile data, as most of it will be unequivocally deleted on May 31, 2011.

On the help forum, Friendster encourages all users to use the ‘Friendster Exporter’ app to download or export their profile information, friends list, photos, messages, comments, testimonials, shoutouts, blogs and groups. Options include porting content to Flickr or Multiply.

On May 31, Friendster will move to wipe out all photos, blogs, comments and groups uploaded or created by its users. The company will, however, keep all accounts alive, along with user friends lists, games details and basic profile information.

Friendster is making the changes under the guise of reinventing themselves as a service focused on “entertainment and fun” (which sounds exactly like Myspace when they started feeling the Facebook heat for real):

Our improved site is designed to create new profiles that allow you to connect differently with people and do things differently than other networking sites. Basically, the new site will complement your existing online presence in other social networking sites.

The new Friendster should be going live in the coming weeks and focus mainly on Asian users.

Just last week, MOL Global / Friendster CEO Ganesh Kumar Bangah told ZDNet that he’s under the impression social media sites are increasingly being made irrelevant because the global social graph is increasingly dominated by Facebook.

He added that, as a result, Friendster will be repositioned as a social entertainment site for people to play games and music, and that it will leverage Facebook Connect.

Coincidentally, it’s been exactly a year since TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington wrote The Age Of Facebook, noting that the social network’s dominance had only just begun.

I wouldn’t exactly call Friendster a casualty of Facebook’s steamroll, but clearly, Friendster the social network as we knew it will be no more by the end of next month.

Apple and Microsoft are still sticking with H.264 as the primary HTML5 video format. For Google, they are supporting the open WebM project. While the aim is to make things easier, it’s actually more complicated since not all companies are working on the same WebM format. For instance, Google Chrome won’t support H.264 already.

Anyway, starting today, all new videos uploaded to YouTube are transcoded into WebM. YouTube will continue to transcode the existing videos to WebM. Since YouTube is the largest video sharing site, no doubt Google will be able to “force” people to use the WebM video standard.

Thankfully, YouTube said they will continue to support H.264 codec. Otherwise, our iOS platform could be the first victim since WebM is not supported yet.

Recent test build 7850.0.winmain_win8m1.100922-1508 of Windows 8 has added the Portable Workspace feature which could be pretty useful. With this interesting new feature, users can transfer the Windows 8 on the USB drive so that it can be accessed anywhere. Users may not need to bring a notebook, if they want to use their own Windows 8 with personal documents and data on other computer.

It’s not sure whether this feature is available in some professional version only.

In July last year, the United States’ federal regulators declared it was lawful to “jailbreak” an iPhone despite strong opposition from Apple as it would affect the company’s lucrative App Store business. Ever since, many iPhone users here have been inquiring whether it is legal to jailbreak their iOS devices, too.

Yahoo! Singapore spoke to five media lawyers and they all confirmed that iPhone jailbreaking is legal, but it comes with a catch. It is legal to hack your iOS to gain access to additional features or install unverified third-party applications that are not available in the App Store if it does not violate any copyright laws. It applies to all mobile operating systems, including Google Android and Windows Mobile.

Installation of customised themes or add-ons from external sources, be it complimentary or premium, is perfectly fine. However if one downloads, for example, the FIFA 11 app, which comes with a price tag of US$2.99 on the App Store, for free, he or she could be subjected to a fine of SG$20,000 under copyright laws.

“Many iPhone users here have instilled the wrong impression. While iPhone jailbreaking might be legal, the copyright laws still apply provided that the software is infringing (on the copyrights), and this includes some of the premium apps that are sold on the App Store,” said James Wong, a 45-year-old lawyer who specialises in copyright lawsuits.

“The wisest choice is to not jailbreak your phone,” he added.

A 16-year-old Secondary 4 student, who has jailbroken his iPhone 4 and declined to be named, said that he will continue to download apps that may infringe on copyright laws even though he may face lawsuits. “It’s just like downloading songs illegally from the Internet and torrenting games or movies. My friends are all doing it and I don’t see any reason why I should obey the copyright laws,” he proclaimed.

The top three reasons why consumers jailbreak their smartphone devices are to install third-party applications banned by the App Store, tweak the user interface, and illegally download premium apps from the App Store because they are not willing to fork out additional money for paid apps on top of the price they paid for the phone itself.

When contacted, Apple spokesman warned that “iPhone jailbreaking can cause the device to become unstable and not work reliably”, and made it clear that jailbreaking the phone will void the warranty.

However, due to the fact that jailbreaking only tinkers with the software, all effects are reversible. Users can revert their phone to its factory settings at any time via iTunes.
